La forma passiva si declina nei diversi tempi verbali espressi dal verbo to be. Nel caso del passato, quindi, si utilizza il simple past di to be + past participle.

Esempi: America was discovered by Christopher Columbus.

L’America fu scoperta da Cristoforo Colombo.

All the students were invited to the party.

Tutti gli studenti erano/erano stati/furono invitati alla festa.

Osserva come, nel filmato di Real Life, il professore utilizzi la forma passiva al passato parlando di Londra e dei suoi monumenti: Londinium was established in AD 43 by the Romans, Londinium fu fondata nel 43 d.C. dai Romani; everything except Westminster Hall was burnt down in the great fire of 1834, tutto eccetto Westminster Hall fu bruciato dal grande incendio del 1834; the present building was designed by Sir Charles Barry, l’edificio attuale fu progettato da Sir Charles Barry.
