Was and were The two positive forms for be in the past tense are was for singular forms except you, which always uses were, and were for all plural forms I was away while you were in London. The negative forms are was not (or wasn’t for short) and were not (or weren’t): You weren’t at home when I called.
With questions, the verb comes before the subject.
Were they at home yesterday?
Was he a friend?
